Welcome New PGY2 Residents and Fellows

We would like to welcome our new residents; Drs. Sarah Eley, Cody Estep, Sarah Fillingim, Summer Morrissette, and Rachel Simmons. We have been pleased to work with these excellent candidates through the first part of the academic year and believe they will provide outstanding contributions to the residency program and the future of dermatology practice.

Sarah Eley, MD - PGY2

Sarah Eley joins us from Akron, Ohio.

Headshot of Dr. Sarah Eley. She graduated with honors from The Ohio State University with a bachelor’s degree in biology. She then matriculated at Northeast Ohio Medical University where she earned her medical degree. During medical school, she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and received the Ted Voneida Neuroscience Award and the Howard J. Igel, M.D. Scholarship. 

Sarah writes, 
“my family and I recently traveled to Greece, where my maternal grandparents were both born and raised. Growing up, my mom frequently returned to Greece with them to visit family. It has always been my family’s dream to travel to Greece together, and this was my sister's and my first trip there. We went to Mykonos, Santorini, Paros, and Athens, and it was incredible! If anyone wants any Greece recommendations, feel free to reach out!”

Cody Estep, MD - PGY2

Cody earned his bachelor’s degree in

biochemistry and molecular biology from Centre College in Danville, KY before attending the University of Kentucky College of Medicine where he earned his medical degree. During medical school he was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society.

Cody writes, "My wife, Alexis, and I are adjusting to life in Mississippi, and we are loving it so far. We have welcomed a new niece and nephew this year and couldn’t be more excited about spoiling them. Traveling is something we love but it has been put on the back burner due to the two new babies in our life. As of now, we are trying new places to eat in the Jackson area. We are both excited to be a part of the UMMC family.”

Sarah Fillingim, MD - PGY2

Sarah Fillingim joins UMMC from Mobile, AL

 where she lives with her husband and three children. She earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from Troy University before receiving a masters in environmental toxicology from the University of South Alabama. She then earned her medical degree from the University of South Alabama’s College of Medicine. During medical school, she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and served as the president of the Gold Humanism Honor Society.

Sarah writes, "My family and I moved from Alabama in July and have begun to settle into life in Madison County. We enjoy spending time outdoors, and have most enjoyed visiting new parks and playing pickleball with our neighbors. We have also welcomed a new member to the family, Marshall the cockapoo. We have been pleasantly surprised by the southern hospitality received from nearly everyone we meet. We are most looking forward to hosting family and friends from out of state during the upcoming holidays, and making many more Mississippi memories. “

Summer Morrissette, MD - PGY2

Summer joined UMMC last Spring as

 Dermatology's inaugural research fellow. Prior to that, she was in Charleston, SC completing her internship year. She graduated with honors from the University of Alabama with a bachelor’s degree in biology. She then earned her medical degree from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. During medical school, she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. 

Summer writes, "my family and I recently traveled to Austria, Switzerland, and Italy for a late celebration (2 years late oops!) of my graduation from medical school, my sister starting dental school, and my dad's 60th birthday! As always, a trip with the family was a great time!”

Rachel Simmons, MD - PGY2

 Mississippi with a bachelor’s degree in biology before earning a master’s in biological and health sciences from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She then earned her medical degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. 

Rachel writes, "Outside of work, my husband, Seth, and I have been busy working on our house we just purchased in Ridgeland! We have recently been focusing on the yard and have laid sod, cut down lots of overgrown bushes and trees, and planted new flowers in the flowerbeds! When we aren’t working in the yard, you can find us walking our golden retriever, Milly, in the neighborhood. We also love to travel to Oxford for Ole Miss games (Hotty Toddy!) and to the coast to visit our family!”

Laura Rezac, MD - Mohs Fellow

After completing the Dermatology residencyHeadshot of Dr. Laura Rezac. program at UMMC, Laura has remained with our department as the 2024-25 Mohs Fellow. Prior to UMMC, Laura attended The University of South Dakota, where she graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Medical Biology. She attended medical school at the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine before completing her internship at the University of South Dakota.

Laura writes, “I am excited for my victory lap in the UMMC Dermatology Department as the Mohs fellow this year! I was able to take a vacation at the end of residency before fellowship and tour Italy with my fiancé, Sam, and best friends. We visited the Amalfi coast, Rome, Naples, Florence, and my best friend got married in the Tuscany wine country!”

Mark Albrecht, MD - Research Fellow

Mark joins UMMC from Salt Lake City, Utah. He

 earned his bachelor’s degree in Biology from Southern Utah University and earned a Master’s in biomedical Sciences from Colorado State University. He then attended Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine where he earned his medical degree.

Mark writes, that "he and his wife, Olivia, and son, Nolan, are enjoying our new home in Mississippi and have loved spending time together exploring the local parks and museums that the area offers. It’s easy to find something to do on the weekend and a recent favorite was a trip to the zoo in Hattiesburg. We are also excited to welcome another addition to the family and are expecting a baby girl this fall! “
